2007 was a year of spreading the word. The FED published The SAIC Solution, by Dr. Beyster and co-author, Peter Economy. As of December 2007, the book has sold over 7,000 copies and has gained broad exposure with numerous book reviews and 3 radio/internet/TV shows. Dr. Beyster has also completed 17 events with over 3,000 attendees, including presentations and panel discussions at UCSD, SDSU, USD, MIT Enterprise Forum and ESOP Association's annual conference.
Dr. Beyster has also published a number of articles that expand on the topics covered in The SAIC Solution. This year, the FED has supported research, curriculum, case study development, a business plan competition, and other initiatives to help institutionalize the body of knowledge on entrepreneurial employee ownership in science and technology at leading higher-education institutions. Our efforts in these areas will continue and increase on a national basis.
Complementing these programs, the FED also has had a strong emphasis on working directly with U.S. science and technology companies to help them prepare for growth. We are specifically working with companies with innovations that address important national interests. Most notably, we have worked with the DARPA SBIR program to develop, design, and produce compelling success reports of over 40 pioneering companies, provided technology transition support to SBIR companies to advance commercialization (PDF, 62k) within DoD and private sector, and provided business advisory support to early stage companies seeking government and commercial opportunitities.
In addition to the programs through the FED, the Beyster Institute has also had a successful year expanding training and education in employee ownership and entrepreneurship through UCSD.
