Mary Ann Beyster led panel discussion at the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) 5th Annual National Small Business Conference
On May 21, 2008, Mary Ann Beyster led a panel discussion at the NDIA National Small Business Conference held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, San Diego, CA. Joining her on the panel were:
- June Chocheles, CEO, Chocheles Consulting Group, Former VP of S&T Strategy, Internal R&D (IR&D) Program, SAIC.
- Babak Nouri, Asst. VP and Deputy Director of Small Business Development Programs, SAIC.
- Larry Trammell, President of TechFlow, Former SVP of SAIC's Technology Services Company.
- Mary Walshok, Dean and Associate Vice Chancellor, UCSD Extended Studies, Public and Economics Program.
The topic of the panel discussion was Technology Innovation in Small Business. Mary Ann started with a discussion of lessons learned from DARPA SBIR Technology Transfer and the speakers addressed topics including Collaboration, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Employee Ownership; The Role of Small Business in Partnering with Primes to Develop and Deliver Innovative Services and Solutions; Business Models for Delivering Technology and Innovation-based Services; and finally Local and Regional Initiatives to Create and Build Technology and Innovation-based Small Businesses.
The NDIA is a defense industry association who sponsors tradeshows and symposiums that provide government and industry interchange and networking opportunities on national security issues. The annual National Small Business Conference provides a forum to educate, guide, and assist businesses, especially small businesses, in working with the federal government. The theme for this year's conference, "Success: Survival & Beyond", is focused on helping companies expand their business opportunities within the Department of Defense.

Mary Ann Beyster Encourages Contract R&D at UCSD $50k Entrepreneurship Competition
On Wednesday, April 23rd, UCSD hosted a panel discussion on ways to fund a start-up. John Yamauchi, 2nd Year Biomedical Graduate and the President of the UCSD $50k Competition kicked off the night with an overview on the importance of getting funding strategies right. Mary Ann provided views on funding through contract research and development to more than 50 contest participants in attendance. Other panelists included Martin Staubus, Director of Employee Ownership at the Beyster Institute; Ted Alexander, Managing Partner at Mission Ventures; and Rick Valencia, Founder and Chairman of Profitline, Inc.
Check out photos from various competition events, especially the Beyster-sponsored event where UCSD students attended the La Jolla Music Society Concert to hear an inspirational performance by a 23 year old classical pianist, Yundi Li. The audience experienced "world class" -- the sound, the look, and the feeling of it, from an artist with extraordinary talents.

FED makes grants to Beyster Institute, Miami University, and San Jose State University for Employee Ownership Case Studies.
The Beyster Institute received a grant from the FED to manage the preparation of case studies about two technology-based employee-owned companies. This project is expected to help expand the awareness of employee ownership in leading business school curricula. Publication is targeted for winter of 2008.
Two prominent professors -- Dr. David Rosenthal at Miami University, Oxford, OH; and Dr. Anne Lawrence at San Jose State University, San Jose, CA -- were chosen to conduct and write these case studies. The Beyster Institute Executive Director Ray Smilor will oversee the project, and has designated senior staff members -- Tony Mathews and Martin Staubus -- to act as liaisons to the case study writers.

Mary Ann Beyster featured as keynote speaker at recent TEDCO event.
Mary Ann Beyster, President of FED, was the keynote luncheon speaker at the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) SBIR Conference held on March 8, 2008, at the University of Maryland, University College Conference Center. This one-day event supports Maryland's small businesses that are familiar with the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) lifecycle to provide a deeper understanding of the selection process and alternative gap funding resources.
Mary Ann spoke about three key principles -- ethic of entrepreneurship, systems of participation, and culture of passion for growing technology-based business -- and shared lessons learned from FED's experience about moving beyond SBIR funding from DARPA and DoD.

DARPA SBIR success reports are now available on-line!
DARPA encourages the submission of SBIR proposals whose technology development will support its mission of advancing state-of-the-art defense technology, have a strong likelihood of being successfully transitioned into a military application, and have a potential civilian application. The FED worked with DARPA to develop compelling profiles of pioneering innovators in the DARPA SBIR program and to define and support execution of technology transition roadmaps. FED sponsors Triton Innovation Network $50k Entrepreneurship Competition
The FED is pleased to be one of the platinum sponsors of the 2007-2008 Triton Innovation Network (TIN) $50k Entrepreneurship Competition. The mission of this competition is to foster community involvement and technological innovation.
Mary Ann Beyster, President of FED, is serving on the judging panel for this competition. The first milestone - $1k Fall Business Concept Competition - ended on 11/30/2007 and the winner will be announced in January, 2008. The next milestone, Executive Summary, is due to run between 1/14/2008 and 3/5/2008. The final milestone, $50k Business Plan Presentations, will run between 4/7/2008 and5/9/2008.
