Letter From Mary Ann Beyster
June 2006
It’s been an interesting, challenging and rewarding start to lay the groundwork to move the Foundation forward with a focus on science and technology innovation. For the past several months, our attention has been in three areas- Dr. Beyster’s book on SAIC, contract work for DARPA, and applying for a MOBIS (Mission Oriented Business Integrated Services) contract award.
We have signed a publishing contract with John Wiley and Sons for the book. Dr. Beyster and Peter Economy, his co-writer, are past the halfway mark. One of the biggest challenges with the book is documenting the specifics. I want to thank those of you who have helped by contributing your insights and views.
I’ve been asked frequently about volunteer opportunities. Helping with the book is the number one priority. See Dad’s blog and please provide the input he is seeking.
Our work for DARPA has gone well. We are reviewing Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) projects and writing summaries of how they succeeded in applying the research to military and civilian applications. SBIR companies have the continued potential of making significant impacts for this country and innovation, and we look forward to working in this area. Please let me know if you have interest or ideas in the SBIR area.
Recently, we received a multiple service contract award under MOBIS from GSA. This contract award provides a great opportunity for the FED to expand our consulting services (SIN 874-1) within the federal government.
As we begin our new fiscal year in July, I see the key priorities for the Foundation in expanding technical management assistance to small business innovators; helping to promote employee ownership, especially in scientific and technical fields, via the Beyster Book, research/education grants, and selective advocacy with The Beyster Institute; and continuing to build capacity within the Foundation and our consulting network. An interesting and promising journey for all.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Beyster
